
It's one of the more remarkable facts about the Mexican-American War that Mexico never won a major battle. They came the closest, however, on February 23, 1847 at the Battle of Buena Vista. Mexican General Santa Anna came after the weakened army of General Zachary Taylor, holding ground in northern Mexico. He had Taylor cornered and outnumbered and the first part of the battle definitely favored the Mexicans. What turned the tide of battle that day?
