The Maya were literate and treasured their books, which were somewhat different physically from ours today. At the time of the conquest, there were thousands of such books but zealous Spanish priests burned most of them because they thought they were the work of the Devil. One of the few surviving Maya codices is the Paris Codex, which shows a calendar and perhaps part of a zodiac.
