Pablo Escobar was born on December 1, 1949 in the Colombian city of Medellin. By the 1970's, he was in undisputed control of most of South America's drug trade, earning billions of dollars shipping cocaine and other drugs to North America. In the 1980's he was elected to Colombia's Congress, which gave him immunity for certain crimes: he wielded far more real power than the President of Colombia. It would not last: he was killed on December 2, 1993, in a rooftop shootout with his enemies.
