Julio Garavito was one of Colombia's greatest scientific minds. He was a pioneer in astronomy, mathematics, engineering and optics. He was also a proud Colombian who worked on economic theories to help rebuild his nation after the disastrous 1000 Day's War. He was instrumental in the construction of Colombia's railways. Today, a prestigious school is named after him, and the International Astronomical Union has named a lunar crater in his honor. The moon is on the back of the bill.
