On the night of December 24-25, 1492, Christopher Columbus' flagship the Santa Maria ran aground and had to be abandoned. This left Columbus with a quandary: he had 39 men that would not fit on his other ships. On Christmas day of 1492 he founded the settlement of La Navidad, which is Spanish for Christmas. Columbus sailed off, leaving the 39 men to their fate. What did Columbus find when he returned almost a year later?
