In 1532-1533, Atahualpa, Lord of the Inca Empire, was a captive of Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizarro. Atahualpa offered to fill a room with gold and then twice over with silver in exchange for his freedom. Soon the treasures of the Empire were being brought to the feet of the invaders. How much gold did Atahualpa give...and did it earn him his freedom?
