The pirating career of Stede "the Gentleman Pirate" Bonnet came to an end on December 10, 1718, courtesy of a hangman's noose. Stede, a born landlubber, was not much of a pirate in spite having learned the trade from Blackbeard himself. Still, he acquitted himself well in his final battle and tried to talk his way out of hanging, to no avail. Is it true that he was driven to piracy by a nagging wife?
