Jose Tomas "Taita" Boves was a Spanish warlord who fought against the patriots during Venezuela's war of independence, where he was one of only a handful of men who ever defeated Simon Bolivar in battle. A cruel, hateful man who deliberately stirred up a genocidal race war, Boves was finally brought down at the Battle of Uriza on December 5, 1814.
