On the afternoon of November 21, 1718, pirate hunters in two ships, the Ranger and the Jane, found the man they were looking for: the legendary pirate, Blackbeard. Blackbeard was aboard his ship Adventure in Okracoke Inlet: he saw the ships cut off his exit and he knew they were there for him. Blackbeard wasn't the sort to go calmly to the noose without putting up a fight: the next morning, November 22, 1718, he attacked the two Royal Navy ships. After an epic battle, Blackbeard was killed: it took five gunshots and 20 sword wounds to bring him down. According to legend, his headless body swam around the ship three times before sinking.
